Hot Chamber vs. Cold Chamber Die Casting
Die casting is an efficient manufacturing process for mass production of various shapes of parts, which have become common items in our homes and workplaces. Die casting provides a reliable process with smooth surface and high quality without any additional polishing or tools.
The two most common methods of die casting are hot chamber and cold chamber. Understanding the difference between these two options can help you evaluate and collaborate with part manufacturers. Let's take a look at each die casting and understand their advantages and disadvantages.
Overview of hot chamber die casting
Hot chamber die casting uses the same process as mentioned earlier-molten metal is forced through the cavity of the preform mold under pressure. The main feature of hot chamber die casting is that the metal is heated inside the casting machine rather than in a separate machine or furnace.
The hot chamber casting machine is also known as the gooseneck machine, which is characterized by a built-in furnace in which the metal is heated to reach a molten state. They use hydraulic pistons to drive molten metal out of the furnace and into the mold. Hot chamber die casting is a relatively fast process, with a typical cycle lasting only 15 to 20 minutes. Although not suitable for high melting point metals, it is ideal for zinc alloys, tin alloys and lead alloys.
Overview of Cold Chamber Die Casting
Based on its name, you might think that cold chamber die casting involves forcing cold metal through the cavity of the mold, but this is not necessarily true. Cold chamber die casting still requires the use of molten metal that is forced into the mold. The difference between the two processes is that the hot chamber die casting method heats the metal in the casting machine, while the cold chamber die casting method heats the metal in a separate furnace and then transfers the newly melted metal to the casting machine.
For cold chamber die casting, the metal must first be heated in a separate furnace to reach a molten state. The molten metal is then transported to the casting machine and then sent to the casting machine room. The machine uses a pressurized plunger to press molten metal into the mold cavity.
Certain types of metals (metals with high melting points) can only be processed by cold chamber die casting. The high temperatures required for metals such as aluminum, magnesium and copper to reach a molten state means that separate furnaces must be used, which is why some manufacturers choose cold chamber die casting instead of hot chamber die casting.
