Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process that occurs naturally when bacteria break down organic matter in an oxygen-free environment. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the breakdown of organic matter by microorganisms into methane, carbon dioxide, inorganic nutrients, and compost in the presence of oxygen and hydrogen. This process, also known as methanogenesis, is used for the rapid and controlled decomposition of organic waste (ie kitchen waste and biomass feedstock) into methane, carbon dioxide, and stable residues.
