The cork oak tree is covered with thick knotty bark, which may have been developed to survive forest fires. This is the source of cork. Healthy cork oak with a lifespan of 200 years can be harvested up to 16 times.

If managed correctly, cork can be a profitable renewable wood product. Felled cork oaks store five times more carbon than unharvested oaks because they use more carbon to regenerate the bark. Cork forest is not only a valuable biodiversity reserve, but also a necessary carbon sink.
