The advantages of DC brush motors are low initial cost, high reliability, and a simple way to control motor speed. The disadvantage is high maintenance cost and low life cycle under high intensity use. Maintenance includes regular replacement of conductive carbon brushes and springs on the commutator, as well as cleaning or replacing the commutator. These devices are the components necessary to transfer external power to the motor.
Carbon brushes are usually made of carbon or graphite, and sometimes copper powder is added to increase electrical conductivity. When used, the soft carbon brush material will wear down to conform to the radius of the commutator, and will continue to wear down. The carbon brush holder has a spring that maintains the pressure of the carbon brush when it becomes short. If the current carried by the carbon brush exceeds one or two amps, a flying wire is placed in the brush and connected to the motor terminal. Very low-power motors use sliding contacts on a metal brush holder to conduct current on the brush, or contact springs to press against the end of the brush. For very low-power, short-life motors (such as those in toys), a folding metal strip in contact with the commutator will be used as a brush.
