Now, researchers at the University of North Carolina have made a breakthrough by developing new technology and software that can more accurately display the remaining battery charge in real time, with an error of less than 5%. In other words, if the software shows 48% battery remaining, it will actually be between 43-53%.
To account for the effects of these factors, the researchers fed data into a computer model multiple times to adapt to the changing factors, and then the software identified the changes to more accurately estimate the percentage of electricity remaining.
The technology, which can be used not only in smartphones and tablets, but also in electric vehicles, can give drivers a sense of how long they can drive, and help developers build longer-lasting batteries and more efficient battery management technologies.
