Features and Advantages of EPON Ethernet Passive Optical Network

 

Fiber Requirements: It require single mode fiber which complies with ITU-T G.652, the uplink wavelength range is between 1260 to 1360nm, the downlink wavelength range is between 1480 to 1500nm and the wavelength range for CATV is between 1540 to 1560nm. It is with symmetric data rate for both upstream and downstream 1.25Gps (fiber); if the optical splitting ratio is 1:32, the maximum transmitting range should reach 10Km and if the optical splitting ratio is 1:16, the maximum transmitting distance should reach 20Km.

WDM Technology: EPON system using WDM technology to realize bidirectional transmission on the same fiber, the downlink use broadcast technology and upstream use TDMA Technology.

 

Advantage of EPON:

(1) Point to multipoint structure, one OLT port can manage 32 pcs ONU (subsequent expansion), each OLT port below all ONU shared by the time sharing multiplexing uplink 1Gbps bandwidth. So it is able to cover very large service range.

(2) Passive optical fiber transmission mode, EPON does not need any complex protocol, optical signal can be accurately transmitted to the end user, the data from the end user can also be centralized to the central network.

(3) EPON uses IP/Ethernet structure. At present, the IP/Ethernet application accounts for more than 95% of the local area network communication. EPON is the most effective way to connect the end users of the access network because of the economical and efficient structure.

(4) The pure passive network can avoid the electromagnetic interference and the lightning influence from the external equipment, all signal process are finished in OLT and ONU, so it reduce the failure rate of the circuit and the external equipment, improve the reliability of the system, and reduce the maintenance cost.

(5) WDM technology realize bidirectional transmission on one fiber and save much cost on fiber.
