The four channels SFP interface Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable (QSFP) was born to meet the market demand for high-density and high-speed pluggable solutions. The 4 channels pluggable interface is with transmission rate of 40Gbps. Many mature key technologies of XFP have been applied to the design of QSFP fiber optic transceiver.

There are two basic interface specifications for QSFP+ optical transceiver, they are 40GBASE-SR4 and 40GBASE-LR4. The former is used in multimode applications, and the latter is used in single mode applications.

The 40G BASE-LR4 QSFP+ optical transceiver conforms to the 802.3ba standard and is used with LC fiber optic connector, and the transmission rate can reach 40Gbps. The optical module has 4 data transmission channels, each transmission channel has a transmission rate of about 10.3125Gbps, and 4 channels can transmit data at the same time to achieve 40Gbps transmission. The 40GBASE-LR4 QSFP+ fiber optic transceiver is usually used between the data center and the Internet switching point, which is used with single mode fiber, and the transmission distance is up to 10km.

The 40G LR4 QSFP+ optical transceiver is generally connected with LC connector and the maximum transmission distance via single mode fiber can be up to 10km. The optical module has four independent transmitting and receiving optical channels. It is necessary to use MUX or DEMUX to reuse and reuse optical signals. At the receiving end, four channels with a transmission rate of 10Gbps will be transmitted at the same time. When these serial data streams are passed to the laser driver, the Directly Modulated Lasers (DMLs) is used to control the wavelength. The optical signals modulated by a direct modulated laser are then multiplexed and assembled together on a single mode fiber. As soon as it reaches the receiver, the transmitted signals are decomposed into four channels with a transmission rate of 10Gbps. Then the PIN detector or mutual resistance amplifier restores each data stream and then sends out the light signal.
