In optical fiber communication system, in order to meet the needs of flexible connection between different equipment and systems, there must be a component can realize connection between optical fiber and optical fiber, optical fiber and devices (including active devices, passive devices and optical fiber sensor), optical fiber and instrumentation, fiber and system and so on, so that the optical signal can be transmitted in required channel. The device that can achieve this function is called fiber adapter, and it is a necessary optical passive device in the optical fiber communication system.

With further development of optical fiber communication, different countries, different manufacturers have developed different fiber optic adapters. According to incomplete statistics, up to now, in international area, there are more than 30 kinds of fiber optic adapter are used. Each fiber adapter has its own technical characteristics. But they do the same thing, that is, connect the optical fiber (optical cable) connector together.

In the use of fiber adapters, the sleeve is as important as the ferrule, and its role is to maintain the precise alignment of ferrule and fiber core, and ensure that the light energy to achieve most transmission.

There are two main structures of the sleeve in optical fiber adapter:

1, open sleeve: open sleeve in fiber adapter is the most common. The open sleeve is usually made of elastic materials such as phosphor bronze, beryllium bronze and zirconia ceramic. When the ferrule is inserted into the sleeve, the supporting force of the sleeve to the ferrule (PIN) should be kept constant. But now the phosphor bronze and beryllium bronze sleeve are few, and most of them are made of zirconia ceramic. Because the zirconia ceramic is better than phosphor bronze, beryllium bronze , it has superior performance in smooth finish, elastic deformation and ceramic ferrule coupling.

2, Closed sleeve: this sleeve is rarely used in fiber optic adapter, but it is used more frequently in the connection between optical fiber and active components. The size and shape are basically the same as the open sleeve, the difference is its inner diameter slightly larger than the outer diameter of the ferrule, so it can let the ferrule inserted smoothly, at the same time the gap is not too large, so it can ensure repeatability and interchangeability can meet the requirements when the fibers is connected to light emitting tube and detector.
