The technique of persimmon dyeing originated from China, which is the country with the largest persimmon production in the world and the first country to dye fabric with persimmons.
The dye comes from persimmon skin, persimmon leaves, persimmon stalks, and persimmon juice can be used as dyes. As persimmon paint, it is taken from immature green persimmons. The astringent persimmon fruit sparsed by persimmon farmers every year is extracted, boiled or fermented to make dye for persimmon dyeing cloth.
Green persimmons are richer in tannins, tannins, and gums. The natural tannins and gums are gradually solidified after dyeing, making the clothes with stronger pigments on the fibers and presenting a leather texture. And every time it is washed with water, its firmness will be improved. This component is more likely to be oxidized under light, which plays a role in color development. The dyed cloth will also become thicker and stiffer. In addition, persimmon dyed fabrics can show a unique "sunlight dyeing" effect when exposed to sunlight.
