Expanded metal mesh also comes as raised mesh or flattened mesh with different hole apertures and thicknesses to suit your individual applications. All materials can be coated using various methods, i.e. galvanising, painting, powder coating etc.
The versatility of expanded metal makes it a suitable material for multiple applications such as: security screens, balustrade infill panels, and walkway mesh. In architecture it can be used as cladding or in the construction of bridges, ornamental features and art displays.
Industrial applications include exhibition stands, window guards, cages, shelving and expanded metal flooring. In the automobile industry it is used as car grilles, radiator grilles and as filtration systems. Where security precautions are important, security lathing is another use for expanded metal, and in fencing applications, it is often used when erecting scaling barriers. Some domestic applications include indoor and outdoor furniture, ceiling tiles etc.
Expanded metal mesh is commonly thought of as a diamond pattern mesh, as much as woven wire mesh is a square pattern.
Expanded metal mesh is produced, unsurprisingly, by an expanding machine. This machine uses a pressured stretching and slitting process to transform solid metal sheets into expanded mesh.
This type of mesh has been produced since the late 19th century and it offers benefits that cannot be achieved through woven mesh, perforated mesh and welded mesh.
Expended metal mesh is produced from one single sheet, so nothing can come loose. This is why it is ideal for forming and model making.
The production process comes from one sheet and is slit and stretched at the same time. This limits waste to a bare minimum, unlike perforated mesh for example.
Expanded metal mesh has a very high strength to weight ration, much higher than standard sheet metal. This means that it is ideal for walkways etc.
The mesh can easily be measured as follows:
- The mesh count given (ie 8mmx 5.8mm) is the cross section from the centre of the strand on the left to the strand on the right (as viewed) and the strand at the top and the strand at the bottom. In other words the pitch is 8mm in one direction and 5.8mm in the other when looked at front on.
- The wires have a depth and a width. The width is the wire as measured from the surface and the depth it the thickness of the sheet.
Low Cost - Galvanizing is lower in basic cost than many other protective coatings for steel.
Long Life - The average life of galvanized coatings on typical structural members is far in excess of 50 years in most rural environments, and 20 to 25 years plus, even in severe urban and coastal exposure. This is dependant on use and maintenance however.
Strength - A galvanized coating has a unique metallurgical structure which gives outstanding resistance to stress, damage and service.
Total Protection - Every part of a galvanized article is protected, even recesses, sharp corners and inaccessible areas. No coating applied to a structure or fabrication after completion can provide the same protection.
