For general reverse osmosis membranes, the desalination rate is an important indicator of membrane separation performance, but for nanofiltration membranes, the separation performance can not be described only by the desalination rate. Sometimes, the rejection rate of nanofiltration membrane to substances with larger molecular weight is lower than that of substances with smaller molecular weight. The filtration mechanism of nanofiltration membrane is very complex. The filtration performance of nanofiltration membrane is also related to the charge of the membrane and the manufacturing process of the membrane. Different nanofiltration membranes have different selective permeability to solutes. For example, the rejection of divalent ions by general nanofiltration membranes is higher than that of monovalent ions. In a multi-component mixed system, the rejection of monovalent ions may be reduced. The actual separation performance of nanofiltration membrane is also related to the operating pressure, solution concentration, temperature and other conditions of nanofiltration process. For example, the permeation flux increases with the increase of the operating pressure, and the rejection decreases with the increase of the solution concentration.
