The tape is created using chemical fiber-based materials like non-woven fabric that has been coated with modified petroleum on both sides. This results in a highly adhesive and elastic tape that possesses a high softening point.
When applied to pipelines, our petroleum tape is used as an inner wrapping tape, and comes with an additional mechanical protection layer in the form of an outer wrapping tape.

Before applying any protective coatings, proper surface preparation is crucial. Surfaces should be free of any loose scale, rust, or foreign matter. According to SSPC SP2 “Hand Tool Cleaning” or SP3 “Power Tool Cleaning”, the surfaces should be prepared accordingly. Another option for surface preparation is a high-pressure water wash that ranges from 3,000 - 7,000 psi (20.68 - 48.26 MPa).
To begin the application process, a thin film of petroleum paste should be applied. After applying the paste, the tape should be spirally wrapped with a 55% overlap. It is important to press air pockets out while wrapping and smooth out all lap seams.
In some cases, irregular surfaces such as valves and flanges may require the use of Petroleum Filler Mastic or Profiling Mastic. PVC tape is then applied as an outerwrap to provide mechanical protection to the surface.
