Disposable Surgical Gown Introduction
Surgical gowns are personal protective equipment used by many people in healthcare. Surgeons and surgical teams use surgical gowns in all types of surgery. Modern surgical gowns provide a breathable protective barrier for surgeons and all healthcare providers.
Surgical gowns provide barrier protection to prevent blood penetration and fluid contamination. Most surgical gowns are sterile and come in various sizes and styles.
Surgical gowns are non-reinforced or reinforced. Non-reinforced surgical gowns have poor durability and are designed for surgical operations with low to moderate fluid contact. Reinforced surgical gowns strengthen protection in specific key areas for more invasive and intensive surgical operations.
The surgical gown covers and provides a barrier for important areas from the shoulders to the knees and wrists. Surgical gowns are usually made of fixed sleeves or raglan sleeves. There are two types of surgical gowns, either with towels or without towels.
Most surgical gowns are made of a fabric called SMS. SMS stands for Spunbond Meltblown Spunbond. SMS is a lightweight and comfortable non-woven fabric that provides a protective barrier.
Surgical gowns are usually rated according to their AAMI level. AAMI is the Association for the Advancement of Medical Devices. AAMI was established in 1967 and they are the main source of many medical standards. AAMI has four levels of protection for surgical gowns, surgical masks and other protective medical equipment.
Level 1: Used in situations where the risk of exposure is minimal, such as providing visitors with basic care and protective clothing.
Level 2: Used in low-risk exposure situations, such as during common blood drawing procedures and sutures.
Level 3: Used for medium-risk exposure situations, such as surgery and insertion of intravenous (IV) lines.
Level 4: Used in high-risk exposure situations, such as during prolonged, fluid-intensive surgical procedures.
