Physicochemical property

Molecular weight: 367.86 g/mol Appearance: white crystalline or powdery solid.
Odor: Odorless or slightly sulphide odor. Density: 2.52 g/cm³ (25°C).
Melting point: about 622°C (decomposition). Chemical Safety: Unrestricted goods

Solubility:
Water: easily soluble in water, the aqueous solution is weakly alkaline (pH about 9-10);
Organic solvent: insoluble in ethanol, and other organic solvents.

Hydrolysis reaction:
It is gradually hydrolyzed in water to form orthophosphate

Complexation:
Form a soluble complex with metal ions (e.g. Ca² +, Mg² +) for softening hard water.

Thermal stability:
When heated to high temperatures (>600°C) it decomposes to form sodium phosphate and oxygen.

Acid base:
The aqueous solution is weakly basic and can react with acid to form phosphate.


Efficacy of trisodium phosphate in water treatment
 

1. Water quality softens
Action: Reacts with calcium and magnesium ions in water to generate insoluble precipitation,
thus softening the water quality.
Reaction equation: 3Ca² + 2PO₄³⁻ → Ca₃(PO₄)₂↓
 
2. Prevent scale formation
Function: By chelating the calcium and magnesium ions in the water,
it prevents the formation of scale in the inner wall of the boiler and pipe.
Application: Widely used in boiler water treatment and cooling water system.
 
3. Corrosion inhibitors
Function: Form a protective film on the metal surface to prevent metal corrosion.
Application: Corrosion inhibition for boilers, heat exchangers and cooling water systems.
 
4. pH adjustment
Function: As an alkaline substance, it regulates the pH value of the water body and maintains the appropriate pH.
Application: Used for industrial wastewater treatment and swimming pool water treatment.
 
5. Dispersant
Function: Disperse suspended particles in water to prevent deposition and scaling.
Application: Used in circulating cooling water system and industrial water treatment.
 
6. Microbial control
Action: By increasing the pH value of water, inhibit the growth of microorganisms.
Application: For drinking water treatment and industrial water treatment.
 
7. Other applications
Flocculant: Used as a flocculant in some water treatment processes to help remove suspended solids.
Cleaning agent: Used to clean water treatment equipment and pipes to remove sediment and dirt.

(1) What is the difference between trisodium phosphate and sodium dihydrogen phosphate?

The trisodium phosphate (Na₃PO₄) contains three sodium ions and is strongly alkaline in aqueous solution.
Sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH₂PO₄) contains two hydrogen ions and one sodium ion.

The aqueous solution is weakly acidic.
(2) Is trisodium phosphate harmful to the human body?

Low toxicity, but avoid inhalation of dust or direct contact with skin.

Production technology

Trisodium phosphate is mainly produced by the following methods:

Phosphoric acid and sodium hydroxide neutralization method:
The phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) was reacted proportionally with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to form trisodium phosphate.
Reaction equation:
H₃PO₄ + 3NaOH → Na₃PO₄ + 3H₂O
H₃PO₄ + 3NaOH → Na₃PO₄ + 3H₂O
After the reaction, the finished product is obtained through the steps of concentration, crystallization and drying.
Reaction method of sodium dihydrogen phosphate with sodium hydroxide:
Sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH₂PO₄) reacted with sodium hydroxide to form trisodium phosphate.
Reaction equation:
NaH₂PO₄ + 2NaOH → Na₃PO₄ + 2H₂O
NaH₂PO₄ + 2NaOH → Na₃PO₄ + 2H₂O
