A potentiometer consists of a long wire that has the same cross-section and uniform resistance throughout its length. Since the wire used by a potentiometer is only a few meters long; therefore, it is usually cut into several pieces, and the pieces of wire are connected together with the help of thick metal strips at their ends. Connecting the wires in this way reduces the longitudinal area and also enhances the potentiometer's functionality. Both ends of the wire are connected to a standard cell or battery pack of known voltage.
A potentiometer works on the principle that if a constant current flows through a resistance wire, the voltage drop across any part of the uniform resistance wire is proportional to the length of the wire. Therefore, if the potential difference between any two parts of the wire is zero, no current flows through the circuit. In a potentiometer, the input voltage is applied to the entire length of the resistance wire and the output voltage is measured between the sliding contact and the fixed end of the circuit. The position of the adjuster (sliding contact) is varied over the length of the uniform resistance wire to find the zero position.
