Introduction

The basic structure of an ultrasonic transducer consists of a piezoelectric material, typically a ceramic or a polymer, sandwiched between two electrodes. When an alternating current is applied to the electrodes, the piezoelectric material undergoes mechanical vibrations due to the piezoelectric effect. These vibrations generate ultrasonic waves with frequencies typically above 20 kHz, which is beyond the range of human hearing.

In the transmit mode, the ultrasonic transducer acts as a sender by converting electrical energy into ultrasonic waves. The alternating current causes the piezoelectric material to vibrate, and these vibrations are transferred to the surrounding medium as sound waves. The frequency of the generated ultrasonic waves is determined by the input electrical signal.

In the receive mode, the ultrasonic transducer acts as a receiver by converting incoming ultrasonic waves into electrical signals. When the ultrasonic waves encounter an object or a medium, they reflect or scatter back towards the transducer. The piezoelectric material, still acting as a transducer, converts these mechanical vibrations caused by the returning ultrasonic waves into electrical signals. These electrical signals can then be processed and analyzed for various purposes, such as imaging or measurement.
