Usage Of Double Cone Upholstery Springs
Upholstery Double cone springs are used in traditional upholstery.
There are various gauges (thickness ) of wire used, as a general guide they are used as follows:
9 gauge (3.65mm) are used for chair and sofa seats
10 gauge (3.25mm) are used for dining seats, small chair seats and sofa backs.
12 gauge (2.64mm) the thinnest are used for sofa and chair arms.

Product Descriptions
Coil springs are usually attached to webbing using a clinch it tool or button twine. When the springs have been properly spaced and attached they must be tied. It is important to tie the springs in a way that they can act as a unit when complete. Jute twine is the most popular choice for securing the springs. There are two common ties that are used to fasten the springs to the frame and to each other.
It is best to replace a set of springs together, and the new chair or sofa springs will be much stronger in comparison with those replaced.
The sizes are shown as 'height x wire thickness', therefore 'inch x gauge'. The higher the gauge number, the thinner the wire.
Design of springs is important
Care needs to be taken when designing a spring for a particular application. As you don’t want it to be too hard to compress, as conversely, you wouldn’t want it to be too forgiving. Typically, the number of coils and or the wire diameter determines the strength of the spring in practical terms, but too many coils will hamper the function of it, and not allow ‘even’ compression. Too few coils and the spring will be in danger of completely collapsing and not returning to its original position on return.
