Tungsten heavy alloy has a series of excellent characteristics, high specific gravity: general specific gravity is 16.5-18.75g/cm3, high strength: tensile strength is 700-1000Mpa, strong ability to absorb rays: its capacity is 30-40% higher than that of lead, heat conduction Large coefficient: 5 times that of die steel; small thermal expansion coefficient: only 1/2-1/3 of iron or steel, good electrical conductivity; good weldability and workability.
The common process for preparing tungsten heavy alloys involves mixing the required amount of tungsten, iron, nickel or copper powder, then cold pressing and liquid phase sintering to almost full density. During the liquid phase treatment, the base tungsten alloy melts and brings some tungsten into the solution, thereby forming a microstructure through which large tungsten particles (20-60μm) are dispersed in the base alloy.
An important use of high-density tungsten alloys is used in aircraft and helicopter lift control and rudder balance devices, aircraft wings and rudder control devices, and aircraft shock absorbers. Used as rotor blade static and dynamic balance weight and shock absorption device on helicopters.
