Tinplate is a thin steel sheet coated by tin. It has an extremely beautiful metallic luster as well as excellent properties in corrosion resistance, solderability, and weldability. Tinplate is used for making all types of containers such as food cans, beverage cans, 18-liter cans, and artistic cans. Its applications are not limited to containers; recently, tinplate has also been used for making electrical machinery parts and many other products.
The largest application by far for tinplate is in packaging (Food cans, Beverage cans, Aerosol cans, closures) and this is thought to account for about 90% of total tinplate production.Existing non-packaging applications cover a diverse range of uses (electrical, automotive, household and construction) although none of these individual uses represents a large tonnage outlet.Jianhui Metals Group has been set up as a forum to discuss potential new non-packaging applications for tinplate.
This specification covers single-reduced electrolytic tin plate produced from low-carbon cold-reduced steel furnished in coils and cut sizes for use in the manufacture of cans, closures, crowns, and other products. It is furnished in commercially available tin coating weights [masses], and is normally supplied with a trimmed edge.
This specification is applicable to orders in either inch-pound units (as A624) which is supplied in nominal thicknesses from 0.0061 to 0.0149 in. or SI units [as A624M] which is supplied in nominal thicknesses from 0.155 to 0.378 mm.
